Criminal Conviction Policy FAQ

Information about background checks and conviction policies by program.

Important Information

Each program has specific requirements regarding criminal convictions. Please review the information for your specific program below and contact the appropriate certification board if you have any questions or concerns.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography

A student who has been involved in a criminal proceeding or who has been charged with or convicted of a crime should be aware that a conviction may not be an automatic bar to certification. Students who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony should:

  • File a request for pre-application review with the ARDMS in order to obtain a ruling on the impact of the situation on their eligibility for certification and registration. This review process is available only to those who are more than six months away from graduation/program completion.

Students with a conviction should be aware that even though they may graduate from CAHE, they may not be able to sit for the ARDMS Certification Examination, which is required to become certified as a sonographer/ultrasound technologist.

Paramedic

A student who has been involved in a criminal proceeding or who has been charged with or convicted of a crime should be aware that a conviction may not be an automatic bar to certification. Students who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony should contact:

Students with a criminal conviction should be aware that even though they may graduate from CAHE, they may not be eligible to sit for the NYS DOH EMS Certification Examination which is required in New York State to be allowed to work as an EMT-Paramedic. A criminal conviction may also make the student ineligible to sit for the National Registry Exam for Paramedics.

Radiation Therapy

A student who has been involved in a criminal proceeding or who has been charged with or convicted of a crime should be aware that a conviction may not be an automatic bar to certification. Students who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony should do the following:

  • File a request for pre-application review with the ARRT in order to obtain a ruling on the impact of the situation on their eligibility for certification and registration.

Students with a conviction should be aware that even though they may graduate from CAHE, they may not be able to sit for the ARRT Certification Examination, which is required for licensure in New York State, and without such certification they will not be allowed to work as a radiation therapist.

  • File a request for pre-application review with the ARRT in order to obtain a ruling on the impact of the situation on their eligibility for certification and registration.

Students with a conviction should be aware that even though they may graduate from CAHE, they may not be able to sit for the NBSTSA Certification Examination.
