Alumni Spotlight: Madeline Merritt's Journey to Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Every healthcare journey begins with a unique story, and for Madeline Merritt, that story began with a desire to help others. A recent graduate of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at CAHE’s Staten Island campus, Madeline has taken her training from the classroom to the hospital, where she has accepted a position as a sonographer at Saint Michael’s Hospital in Newark, NJ.

Originally from New Jersey, Madeline’s passion for healthcare was inspired by helping care for her grandparents. That experience sparked her interest in pursuing a profession focused on caring for others and ultimately led her to Diagnostic Medical Sonography. The field combines technology with patient interaction, allowing healthcare professionals to play an important role in diagnosing and monitoring a wide variety of medical conditions through ultrasound imaging.

Diagnostic Medical Sonographers are valuable members of the healthcare team. Using specialized ultrasound equipment, they produce detailed images that help physicians evaluate organs, tissues, blood flow, and developing pregnancies. In addition to technical knowledge, sonographers must demonstrate professionalism, attention to detail, and strong communication skills as they work closely with patients throughout the imaging process.

Like many students entering the healthcare field, Madeline understood that earning a healthcare education requires dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to continue learning. Throughout her educational journey, she was supported by her fiancé and family, whose encouragement helped her remain focused on achieving her goals.

Alongside her studies, Madeline stepped into a leadership role as Class Representative for her cohort, helping foster communication between students and faculty while encouraging a positive and supportive classroom environment.

Her favorite quote, “Success doesn’t come from what you do occasionally; it comes from what you do consistently,” reflects the mindset that carried her through the program. Consistency, hard work, and commitment are qualities that are essential in healthcare, and they are the same qualities she now brings to patient care every day.

Here at CAHE, we are proud to celebrate graduates like Madeline who took on leadership while building the skills for a rewarding career. Congratulations, Madeline, on your graduation and your new position. We look forward to seeing all you accomplish as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.
