From Setback to Success: One Paramedic’s Journey of Perseverance and Purpose in EMS

In the world of emergency medical services (EMS), no two journeys are the same; however, some stories remind us why this work is more than just a job – it’s a calling. For one EMS professional, the path to becoming a paramedic was anything but linear. Marked by personal challenges, sheer determination, and an unwavering commitment to helping others, Tiffany Santos’ journey stands as a testament to resilience and the deeply rewarding nature of serving in EMS.

A Journey Marked by Determination

Before becoming a paramedic, Tiffany spent seven years working as an EMT, building experience and a deep understanding of the EMS field. Her initial attempt at paramedic school didn’t go as planned, as life circumstances led to a major setback. But instead of giving up, she regrouped and returned with more focus and determination than ever. Tiffany entered the Paramedic Program as a single mother to a two-year-old while working two demanding jobs: one at Jamaica Hospital and the other at Wyckoff Hospital. She pushed through and studied hard, never losing sight of her goal. That perseverance paid off: she successfully completed the program and passed the New York State and REMAC exams – all on the first try.

“If I can do it,” she says, “so can all of you.”

Why EMS Is Worth It

As a registered nurse, Tiffany continues to work part-time as an EMS supervisor at Jamaica Hospital. Why? Because EMS, she says, is the most rewarding job she’s ever had.

“You get to witness the outcomes of your critical thinking skills and appropriately apply them when needed,” she explains. “There is no other job like it.”

For Tiffany, EMS is about making a meaningful impact. It’s about staying humble in the face of real-life emergencies, where decisions matter and every action counts. After 16 years in the field, her advice to those just starting out is clear and powerful: “Stay focused and push yourself to be the greatest version of yourself.”

A Message to Future EMS Providers

This story isn’t just about overcoming obstacles. It’s about embracing the challenges and recognizing the privilege of being someone’s lifeline in their most critical moments. It’s about showing up, even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard.

At CAHE, we’re proud to be part of journeys like these: stories that reflect the heart, grit, and purpose that define emergency medical services.

If you’re just starting out or considering a career in EMS, remember that success doesn’t always come from having the perfect path; it arises from never giving up on the one you’re on.
